Neurological Levels of Change
When we want to affect change or something about our current circumstances doesn’t sit right, there are two levels we can approach things at in order to create a better outcome for ourselves.
First order change is where many of us start. We try to affect change at the same or lower level to where the problem exists. This type of change is often temporary and doesn’t get to the root of what’s causing the problem.
EXAMPLE 1:
Problem: I'm frustrated in my job (behahaviour)
Solution: Find another job (behaviour and environment)
Result: Quickly find yourself in the same frustrated position in the new job
Second order change is often harder but the outcomes are aligned and sustainable.
EXAMPLE 2:
Problem: I'm frustrated in my job (behahaviour)
Solution: Clarity on what you bring to the table, where you want to make a difference and how others experience you. (mission, vision, values and beliefs)
Result: You get back in the drivers seat and create aligned opportunities which may mean you change you change your job, or may mean you stay but the behaviour is rooted in higher order alignment (Purpose, Identity, Values & Beliefs)
UNCOVER VS DISCOVER
Have a go at thinking through your chosen area of change using the Neuro-logical Levels. Are you approaching things from a First order change or a Second order change? How does this change your perspective? It can be helpful to talk it through with a coach.
“When I explored with this tool on my own I found it hard to find new perspectives. I reached what I had in my consciousness. My coach challenged me to dig much deeper, it was what I subconsciously held that made all the difference
